It is well known that walking boosts the immune system, enhances the nervous system and your cognitive function. Walking in a natural setting seems to have additional magical benefits and connects you to a higher spiritual place. Walking+Nature=Awesome
Not far from Washinton DC (less than 2 hours) off of route 66 is a small town named Front Royal. After winding through the town a bit you enter the Shenandoah National Park or otherwise known as Skyline drive. If you have never made the journey … just go! Skyline drive is filled with spectacular vistas. But the real beauty is found in the numerous hikes and trails you can access along the drive.
Once you enter the park, make your way along Skyline Drive, stopping at some of the scenic turn-offs along the way, look for Dark Hollow Falls Trail at Mile Post 50.7. The trail is kind of busy in the mid-day, early morning we think is best.
The trail is in and out (on the same trail) about 1.5 miles. Beginning with an easy downhill walk to the falls with plenty of great views of nature. So take your time and enjoy! Coming back is just a bit more challenging as it is all uphill. Highly recommended!
After your hike
Remember
1. Bring water – hydration is a key to an active body
2. Bring your camera – it won’t do any justice but you need to try – incredible views
3. You might see a bear – read about what to do!
4. Do not speed in the park – everyone is looking at the scenery including those in cars, bikers, hikers, and bears.
